Energy companies call for binding targets on carbon, renewables and energy efficiency
Three of Europe’s major energy companies are calling on the European Commission to set binding 2030 targets for carbon emissions, renewables and energy efficiency as part of a second climate and energy package.
Eneco from the Netherlands, Dong Energy from Denmark and the UK’s SSE want the EU to follow up its first climate and energy package, which was adopted in 2009, with a second package of policies.
While the first deal set a path for EU nations up to 2020, requiring 20% improvements in carbon emissions, renewables and energy efficiency, the coalition says there is a policy gap between 2020 and the region’s ultimate 2050 goal of cutting emissions 80-95%.
A new 2030 climate and energy package of binding targets and other measures, including the EU ETS, are needed to bridge the gap, enabling “timely and affordable” decarbonisation of the energy system.
